To evolve NerdWallet from a content-driven platform into a more product-oriented, user-centric company, we embarked on a design sprint aimed at developing a personalized experience for users based on their financial goals. The goal was to guide consumers through their financial journey by offering a comprehensive financial picture, understanding their unique financial goals, building trust through conversation, and offering simple, actionable steps toward achieving those goals. Key features introduced included the Personal Discovery Feed, a dynamic, relevancy-based hub that became the user’s home experience; the Financial Profile, which tracked spending habits and behaviors; and Financial Goals, allowing users to declare and work toward specific financial milestones. This new direction was designed to offer a deeper, more relationship-driven experience than just informational content.
NerdWallet's core challenge was transitioning from being a content-driven platform, largely reliant on SEO traffic, to a product-oriented, user-centric experience. While the platform had successfully helped users with financial decision-making by providing in-depth, unbiased content, its shallow experience left users with little reason to return. The existing model was fragmented, and users often didn’t realize NerdWallet’s broader offerings across the financial landscape. Additionally, consumer pain points—such as feeling overwhelmed by finances, lacking trust in financial institutions, and not knowing what steps to take—highlighted the need for a more personalized, holistic experience. This created an opportunity to not only improve user engagement but also build lasting relationships with consumers.
Our design sprint didn’t just result in new features—it set the course for the company’s long-term vision. The Personal Discovery Feed, Financial Profile, and Financial Goals each played a crucial role in creating a more personalized, actionable experience for users. The new platform enabled NerdWallet to proactively push tailored advice and tools that users might not have known they needed. This increased engagement, fostered trust, and empowered users to take meaningful steps toward their financial goals.
Beyond the immediate improvements to the user experience, the work my team and I did during those two weeks helped to redefine NerdWallet’s strategic direction. Our efforts laid the groundwork for the company’s 2017 strategy and product roadmap, shifting the focus from SEO-driven traffic and content to a more sustainable, user-focused model. This transformation enabled NerdWallet to build a stronger, relationship-based membership experience, ultimately reducing its reliance on SEO and positioning the platform as a trusted partner in users' financial lives. The result was a deeper engagement with consumers and a foundation for long-term growth.
